Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

WINNIPEG, Manitoba. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants' 3-2 defeat of the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Wednesday in Winnipeg was as close as they get.

Pheasants closer Aaron Cotter entered the ninth inning with a 3-1 lead and seeking a record-breaking save. After the Goldeyes put the tying runs into scoring position with two outs, Price Kendall singled to left field, scoring Louis Ott. Ridge Carpenter attempted to score from second, but he was thrown out at home plate by Francisco Leandro for the game's final out.

Cotter earned his 13th save of the year and career save 47 with Sioux Falls, surpassing Kris Regas (2007-2009) for most in franchise history.

The save preserved an outstanding outing from Chris Salberg (3-7), who earned the victory in his fourth consecutive quality start. Salberg tossed seven innings, allowing just one run on three hits. He walked four and struck out two. Since rejoining the starting rotation on July 25, Salberg is 2-0 with a 2.49 ERA.

With a Sioux Falls bullpen worn thin in the late part of the season, the Pheasants turned to ace Ben Moore to hold a 3-1 lead in the eighth inning. Moore worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam on a strikeout and a double play in his first relief appearance since 2007.

The Pheasants never trailed after Reggie Abercrombie's RBI fielder's choice scored Joe Anthonsen in the first inning. Anthonsen led off the ballgame with a double. In the third, Abercrombie singled and Gus Milner scored from first base after a throwing error. The Pheasants extended their advantage to 3-0 on Kevin Carby's two-out, RBI single in the fourth.

The Goldeyes' only run came on a groundout from Louis Ott in the fifth inning.

Anthonsen led the Pheasants at the plate with a 2-for-5 performance and the Pheasants' only extra-base hit.

The Pheasants record improved to 39-43. Sioux Falls' win coupled with a St. Paul loss pulled the Pheasants to eight games out in the wild card race with 18 games remaining.

The finale of the four-game series is at 12:05 p.m. on Thursday, August 11 in Winnipeg. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
