St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN (August 10, 2011) - The St. Paul Saints saw why the Wichita Wingnuts are one of the best hitting teams in the league as they pounded out 17 hits, losing 8-2 on Wednesday night at Midway Stadium in front of 5,503.

Saints starter Donald Brandt gave up a career high 12 hits and it started in the second inning on back-to-back singles from Carlos Rivera and Jorge Delgado. After a sacrifice bunt from Josh Workman moved the runners up, Brandt got a big strike out of Peter Barrows. Edwin Bellorin, however, drove in both runs with a double to give the Wingnuts a 2-0 lead.

In the third the Wingnuts exploded for four more runs to make it 6-0. With a runner at second and one out Juan Richardson doubled scoring Josh Horn to make it 3-0. Rivera followed that with an RBI single. Two batters later Workman hit a two-run homer to right, his 10th of the season, to finish the scoring in the inning.

The Wingnuts scored their final two runs in the fifth when Rivera led off with a double and moved to third on a single from Delgado. Workman drove in his third run of the night with a single to center. Bellorin made it 8-0 with an RBI single to right. Brandt went 4.0 plus innings allowing eight runs on 12 hits while striking out three.

The Saints offense didn't do much early against Wingnuts starter Junior Guerra who was perfect through three. The first Saints hit came with one out in the fourth from Ronnie Bourquin who singled to left. They finally got on the board in the fifth when Argelis Nunez doubled to center, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly from Richard Mercado to make it 8-1.

In the eighth Mercado led off with a double and scored on Steve Mays' single. Guerra went 7.2 innings allowing two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out six.

The Saints got great relief outings from Kris Edwards, who went 4.0 scoreless innings allowing four hits and striking out one, while Jake Schmidt came off the disabled list and made his first appearance in over a month and pitched a scoreless inning.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the four game series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. at Midway Stadium. The Saints send LHP Edwin Walker (3-5, 4.29) to the mound against Wingnuts RHP Chad Sherman (3-3, 6.46). It is the 125th Anniversary of Bosch and the first 1,501 fans receive a wooden airplane. The game can be seen live on the Saints Cable Network (check saintsbaseball.com for the channel in your area) and heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
