Two Third-Period Goals Sink P-Bruins Versus Sound Tigers
October 17, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CONN.- The Providence Bruins limited the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to three goals, but it was not enough to escape victorious Saturday night at Webster Bank Arena. The home squad swept the home-and-home series with a 3-1 win.
For the second time in as many nights, the P-Bruins allowed the game's first goal. After the home team had to empty the zone to avoid an offside whistle, an errant Providence pass was picked off by Joe Whitney. The center slid through the rest of the zone and beat goalie Matthew Ginn at 4:32, who was making his AHL debut.
The Bruins registered their fourth power play goal of the weekend to knot it up at one apiece. Brandon DeFazio scored against his former team when he took a feed from Noel Acciari, took a shot, then jammed his own rebound past an off-balance Stephon Williams at 6:15.
The teams were held scoreless in the second period, and neither team could muster double-digit shots (which was also the case in every period on Friday). Justin Vaive had a pair of interference minors, but the Bruins failed on consecutive power plays for the first time in more than a week.
Neither team had a high-quality scoring chance in the frame, though Anton Blidh and Justin Florek both came close for their respective teams.
Bridgeport's two third-period goals clinched the win, as Ryan Pulock registered a goal on a slapper from the blue line. Taylor Beck had a screen of Ginn to set it up at 5:07. Justin Hickman won the battle of the Justins with Justin Vaive as the smaller forward landed the most punches in their bout and pinned Vaive to the ice with 2:49 left.
Providence had Max Iafrate on the ice as a fourth forward before that point, with Matt Irwin as the lone defenseman, but didn't generate any great chances with that setup. With 0:48 left, Providence had a 6-on-4, but Adam Pelech scored a shorthanded goal for the second game in a row, this time an empty-netter from the other side of the sheet with 0:35 left.
The Bruins open a home-and-home series with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Friday at the Dunk at 7:05pm.
PROVIDENCE SCORING
#24 Brandon DeFazio 1 (#10 Noel Acciari), 6:15, 1st period
