Rochester Americans News Release

(St. John's, NFLD)... The St. John's IceCaps scored four times in the third period, including twice on the power-play, and received a hat trick from rookie forward Michael McCarron as the IceCaps completed the two-game sweep over the visiting Rochester Americans with a 6-2 win in the second game of the weekend set Saturday at Mile One Centre. The loss drops the Amerks to 2-2-0-0 through the first four games of the 2015-16 season.

Phil Varone and Jerry D'Amigo were the goal-scorers for the Amerks while Andrey Makarov finished with 30 saves in his season debut for Rochester. Nick Baptiste, Jerome Leduc and Dan Catenacci each earned assists.

McCarron's three-goal night was complemented by a three-point showing from Christian Thomas (1+2) while Bud Holloway (0+2), Charles Hudon (0+2) and Joel Hanley (1+1) each posted two points in the win for the hometown IceCaps. Morgan Ellis rounded out the scoring for St. John's with his first of the season and goaltender Dustin Tokarski made 29 saves on 31 shots in his return between the pipes.

St. John's needed only 2:45 of the opening period to storm out to a 2-0 lead courtesy of back-to-back strikes from Ellis and McCarron. Ellis opened the scoring a mere 67 seconds after the opening face-off when he blasted a one-timer by Makarov off a nifty setup by Holloway for his first goal of the season.

McCarron then followed up with his first professional goal just 1:38 later to put the IceCaps ahead by a pair as the rookie forward gathered a loose puck in front of Makarov and tucked a back-hander inside the left post.

Varone brought the Amerks to within a goal with 2:56 remaining in the second period when he put home a Baptiste rebound to make it a 2-1 game. Baptiste whipped a shot on net from the top of the circles that Tokarski denied, but the rebound kicked out to the low slot to Varone, who would cash in on the second opportunity.

The IceCaps kept plugging away, though, and soon answered back with a pair of power-play markers to begin the final frame. First, Thomas weaved his way through the center of the ice before snapping a wrist shot by Makarov and McCarron responded with his second of the night 8:10 later on a deflection of a Holloway blast from the point.

D'Amigo's second of the season at 13:27 would bring the score to 4-2, but St. John's piled on two more in the final 4:38 to put the game away for good. McCarron completed the hat trick off a feed from Thomas and Hanley added another in the closing minutes to give the IceCaps a 6-2 win.

The Amerks return to the Empire State to close out their three-game road swing on Wednesday, Oct. 21 when they visit the intrastate rival Utica Comets for a North Division showdown at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. The 7:00 p.m. contest will be the second of eight scheduled meetings between the two teams this season and will be carried live on Fox Sports 1280 Rochester.
