Two-Run Eighth Puts B-Mets Over the Top in 6-5 Win Over Defenders

Ike Davis went 2-3 and scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the Binghamton Mets 6-5 comeback win over the Connecticut Defenders Thursday night at NYSEG Stadium. The B-Mets took three of four from the Defenders to win their first series since May 14-17.

Trailing by one run in the eighth the B-Mets got a lead-off hit from Josh Thole against Defenders reliever Joe Paterson. Davis then walked, and Lucas Duda sacrificed both men one base with a bunt. Jonathan Malo then hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Thole to tie the game. Waldis Joaquin then came in to relieve Paterson and his first pitch reached the backstop allowing Davis to score the go-ahead run, making it 6-5.

Connor Robertson nailed down the save for Binghamton in the ninth, his sixth, as he struck out Eddy Martinez-Esteve with a runner on third to end the game.

Connecticut (55-43) scored first, striking for one run off B-Mets starter Brad Holt in the first inning on a Brett Pill solo home run.

Binghamton took the lead in the third when they strung together four straight hits with two outs off Defenders starter Tim Alderson. Emmanuel Garcia started it off with a bunt single and Ruben Tejada moved him to third with a single. Thole then drove in Tejada with a base knock to center field. Davis followed by driving in Tejada from second to put the B-Mets in front 2-1.

The Defenders responded in the fourth when Holt hit Tyler LaTorre and then allowed a two-run homer by Sharlon Schoop to put Connecticut back in front 3-2. Alderson then went deep for his first career home run, making 4-2.

Jose Coronado hit into a run-scoring double play in the bottom of the fourth to pull Binghamton (38-59) within one. He plated Jonathan Malo, who singled to lead off the inning.

Brett Pill hit his second solo home run of the game off Holt in the fifth to put the Defenders up two again.

Duda moved into a tie for the team lead in home runs, with seven, when he went deep off Alderson in the sixth to bring the B-Mets back within one, at 5-4.

Holt gave up four home runs in his six innings, giving up five runs on nine hits. Jose De La Torre won his first AA game, pitching two scoreless innings in relief of Holt.

Paterson was pinned with the loss, spoiling what could have been a win for Alderson. Alderson went seven innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits.

Binghamton travels to Erie for a three game-set beginning Friday night, before heading to Altoona for four games. The B-Mets will toss RHP Eric Brown (4-11, 5.98) and the SeaWolves will send RHP Thad Weber (3-2, 3.57) to the mound. The first pitch is slated for 7:05 and the radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:50 with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
