New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- Luis Sanchez smacked a seventh-inning single, Marty McLeary pitched a season-high seven innings, and Casey Janssen worked one hitless inning of relief in a Major League injury rehabilitation assignment, but a standing-room-only crowd of 8,054 left disappointed when the Trenton Thunder shut out the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 4-0, on Thursday afternoon at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
The Thunder (50-47) broke up a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning. McLeary allowed back-to-back walks to Marcos Vechionacci (0-for-3, BB, R) and James Cooper (0-for-3, BB, R). Kyle Anson (1-for-3, 2B, BB, RBI, 2 R) then lined an RBI double to score Vechionacci, Justin Snyder (0-for-4, RBI) plated Cooper with a ground out and Reegie Corona (2-for-4, RBI) added a run-scoring single for a 3-0 Trenton lead.
Austin Krum (1-for-3, 3B, BB, RBI) tripled home Anson (walk) in the top of the seventh inning to give the Thunder a 4-0 advantage.
That was plenty of offense for the five Trenton pitchers -Jason Stephens, Kanekoa Texeira, Wilkins Arias, Grant Duff and Jose Valdez- who combined on a one-hit shutout. Texeira (8-5) walked two and fanned two over three hitless frames of relief to record the win.
McLeary (2-3) suffered the loss after yielding four runs on six hits, with two strikeouts and four walks.
Working a hitless eighth inning, Janssen struck out one of the four batters he faced in what was his third and likely final rehab relief appearance with New Hampshire (45-53), as he works his way back to the Toronto Blue Jays bullpen.
Sanchez (1-for-1), who entered the game as a defensive replacement in the top of the seventh, broke up the no-hitter with a one-out single off Arias in the bottom of the seventh. That would be the only hit for the Fisher Cats, who dropped the final three games of the four-game series.
New Hampshire opens a three-game series against the Portland Sea Dogs at Hadlock Field on Friday night at 7:00pm with right-hander Randy Boone (6-5, 3.86) pitching against Portland right-hander Jarod Plummer (7-4, 3.54). Radio coverage begins at 6:45pm with the BayRing Pre-Game Show on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman.
The Fisher Cats open a four-game series at Merchantsauto.com Stadium against the New Britain Rock Cats on Monday night at 7:05pm. Fans can play USA Subs Baseball Bingo, and it will be the Celebration of the Negro Leagues, with former Boston Red Sox pitcher Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd and award-winning author Larry Tye signing autographs and discussing Tye's new book Satchel in the Samuel Adams Bar & Grill from 5:00pm-6:00pm.
