Curve Shut Out Reading in Seasons Finale
July 23, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release
ALTOONA, PA - The Curve offense was in full force and Derek Hankins had an excellent outing as Altoona took their third out of four games from the Reading Phillies (AA-Philadelphia Phillies) in an 8-0 shutout win Thursday night at Blair County Ballpark.
Hankins (2-3) allowed just four hits and struck out three in six scoreless innings of work. Both of Hankins' wins this year have now come in shutouts, the other on July 4th in a 1-0 Curve win over Bowie. Relievers Dustin Molleken and Michael Dubee each tossed a scoreless frame to preserve the shutout win.
Eight Curve starters recorded hits including OF Jonel Pacheco who belted his team leading 11th home run off of Reading starter Joe Savery (12-3) in the third inning. Pacheco finished the night 2-for-3 with a homer and an RBI. Other exemplary offensive performances came from CF Gorkys Hernandez, who had an RBI single and scored three runs in a 2-for-4 night, and Pirates top prospect Pedro Alvarez who also had a 2-for-4 night driving home two runs.
The Curve (38-61) have now won four of their last five games and hope to keep the momentum going as they travel to Akron for a three game series with the Akron Aeros (AA-Cleveland Indians). The series kicks off Friday night at 7:05 p.m. at Canal Park. Friday's probable starters are lefty Daniel Moskos (7-7, 3.96), who is looking for his fourth straight win for Altoona, and southpaw Michael Tejara (1-2, 7.47) for Akron. Radio Coverage for Friday's contest begins at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network.
