Portland Sea Dogs News Release
(New Britain, CT) - New Britain starter RHP Deolis Guerra (3-0) hurled a 7-inning complete game shutout as the Rock Cats (50-48) took game one of a doubleheader 1-0 over the Portland Sea Dogs (47-50) on Thursday night at New Britain Stadium. Guerra fanned a season-high 12 batters on four hits, one walk and retired 21 of 26 batters faced.
The Rock Cats scored the lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning off losing pitcher RHP Bryce Cox (0-4). 1B Erik Lis, DH Steve Singleton and SS Toby Gardenhire all had infield-singles to aid the victory. Gardenhire's infield-hit to 3B Jorge Jimenez scored 3B Luke Hughes with the winning run.
RHP Junichi Tazawa (ND) tossed six scoreless frames, retiring 18 of 22 batters faced and lowered his ERA to 2.57 (2nd in the Eastern League). Tazawa allowed three hits, one walk and fanned five - yielding all four baserunners with two outs.
CF Josh Reddick (single), SS Yamaico Navarro (single), LF Ryan Kalish (single) and 2B Ryan Khoury (single) had the hits for Portland. The entire game was played in a steady rain and took 2 hours and 6 minutes to play.
LHP Tommy Hottovy will make his first start of the season for the Sea Dogs in game 2 of the doubleheader beginning at 7:45 PM. RHP Cole DeVries (6-9, 3.63) makes his 19th start of the season for New Britain.
