Rock Cats Win in the Seventh
July 23, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - Deolis Guerra struck out a career-high 12 in a complete game shutout and Toby Gardenhire knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to lead the Rock Cats to a 1-0 victory over Portland in the opening game of Thursday night's doubleheader.
Guerra (3-0) scattered four hits in seven scoreless innings. He set a career record for strikeouts in a game in just his fourth Double-A appearance.
Junichi Tazawa matched Guerra inning-for-inning in an old-fashioned pitcher's duel. Tazawa fired shutout six innings, allowing just three hits. He struck out five.
The Rock Cats finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh when Luke Hughes reached base on a ground force out and Steve Singleton's infield single to third put Hughes into scoring position. Juan Portes followed with another ground out that forced Singleton out at second. That set the stage for Gardenhire who, with two strikes, delivered a dribbler to third base that allowed Hughes to score.
Cox (0-4) suffered the loss after allowing three hits and the lone run of the game in the seventh.
