Two more Beach Bums named All-Stars

July 6, 2006 - Frontier League (FL)
Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

The Traverse City Beach Bums are very happy to announce that two more players have made the East Division All-Star team as infielder Steve Young and catcher Clay Blevins were chosen as manager's selections to the squad.

The two picks give the Beach Bums seven All-Stars, tied for the most in the league with Chillicothe and Rockford.

Young is hitting .270 with a homerun and 12 RBI. He has eight steals this season in eight attempts. He leads the Frontier League in times hit by pitch with 15, helping to contribute to his .373 on-base percentage, third highest in the league among second baseman. Young also leads the league in fielding percentage with a .986 fielding percentage, tops in the league among second baseman.

"I may not have the offensive numbers that other All-Stars in the game have, but it's great to be recognized for doing all the fundamental things right to help our team win," Young said when informed of his selection.

Young's selection also means that 3/4 of the Beach Bums starting infield will be making the trip to Evansville. Nick Batkoski was voted as the starting third baseman for the East Division while Justin Holmes is on the team as a reserve infielder. The switch-hitting Young may turn out to be the starter at second base depending on the health status of Chillicothe's Paul Rutgers.

Clay Blevins is hitting .290 with a homerun and 11 RBI. He is the only catcher in the Frontier League to not have committed an error this season. Blevins also leads the league throwing out 39.4% of the base runners attempting to steal off of him. Also a strong fundamental player at the plate, Blevins is tied for third in the league with three sacrifice flies. Making sure he put the bat on the ball, Clay has struck out only once for every 8.3 at-bats, more than three at-bats better than either of the other two East Division catchers.

Jeff Isom will manage the East Division All-Star team with Jon Cahill and Jared Howton being named as coaches.

The Beach Bums will play a short three game series at Windy City before coming home for a three game series with Gateway July 8-10. On July 8, the Beach Bums will be the Grand Marshals of the Cherry Royale Parade starting at 11:15 a.m. Later that day, the team will play a special 5:05 p.m. game against the Grizzlies when the fabulous Zooperstars, the hottest traveling mascot act in sports will make an appearance to entertain fans between innings.
