T-Bolts rally past Beach Bums

July 6, 2006 - Frontier League (FL)
Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

The Windy City ThunderBolts scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past the Traverse City Beach Bums 5-4.

Windy City scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning when Josh Buhagiar (boo-HA-Zhure) singled home Anthony Serratelli for a 1-0 WC lead.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Traverse City plated a run on an RBI double by Clay Blevins, scoring Al Roach.

The Beach Bums plated three runs in the top of the third inning thanks to a bout of wildness by Windy City starter Drew Coffey. The left-hander walked the first two men of the inning. A fly out by Brad Vericker allowed Justin Holmes to go to third. Steve Young stole second to put runners on second and third with one out. Nick Batkoski hit a shallow fly ball to center for the second out of the inning. Not allowing the opportunity to go to waste, Doug Garcia singled into right field, plating both runs and making it 3-1. On the play, Garcia took second on the throw. That play would prove to be important as the next hitter, Mike Reese lined a single into center, scoring Garcia and making it 4-1.

The T-Bolts scored a single run in each of the fourth and fifth innings on RBI singles off the bats of Jason Mann and John McCarthy to pull to 4-3.

Windy City took the lead back in the seventh. Doug Schutt led off with a walk. Anthony Seratelli was hit by a pitch. With runners on first and second, Josh Buhagiar grounded a ball to second that appeared destined to be a double play, however, the base umpire ruled that Brad Vericker's foot was not on the base, putting runners at the corners with one out. The mistake proved costly as the next batter, Mike Forbes hit a sacrifice fly to score the tying run. With a runner on second and two outs, the T-Bolts were able to smack singles that kicked off the gloves of Hunter Davis and Vericker to score the go ahead run.

Windy City relief pitching came up big for the second straight night. Billy Phillips, Rick Weber and Brian Beuning (BOY-ning) combined to pitch 4.2 innings of perfect relief. The T-Bolts have now tossed 7.2 perfect in relief for the series.

Billy Phillips (3-0) picked up the win in relief for the ThunderBolts. Beuning recorded his 11th save of the year. Hunter Davis (2-3) takes the loss for the Beach Bums.
