LOVES PARK, Ill. ¬- The Gateway Grizzlies doubled their way to an 8-1 win over the Rockford RiverHawks on Thursday.
Eight of the nine Gateway hits were for two bases, and the Grizzlies had three pairs of back-to-back doubles. Dustin Roberts was 3-for-5 with three doubles for Gateway, in front of 2,003 at RiverHawks Stadium.
The Grizzlies never trailed. Roberts led off the second and fourth innings with doubles and scored each time. Freddy Lopez doubled him home in the fourth to break a 1-1 tie. Taylor Johnson and Roberts hit back-to-back RBI doubles off Rockford starter Tanner Watson (4-2) with two outs in the fifth inning.
Gateway starter Chris Little (2-2) pitched 6 2/3 innings for the win. He walked five and struck out four, but combined with the bullpen on a six-hitter. Steve Holdren had two of Rockford's six hits.
Gateway has outscored Rockford 13-1 in taking the first two games of the series.
