Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - Cedar Rapids Kernels designated hitter A.J. Murray nearly hit for the cycle in a 3-2 victory in game two of a doubleheader split Tuesday against the Kane County Cougars at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Kane County (17-14) won game one, 2-0, before Cedar Rapids (17-14) evened the series via its game two triumph.

The Kernels grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the second inning of game two. Nelson Molina drove in J.J. Fernandez with a single to open the scoring. Alex Perez followed by hitting a sacrifice fly that scored Brian Olson, who was playing in his Kernels debut.

In the fourth inning, back-to-back RBI singles allowed the Cougars to tie Tuesday's nightcap. Eduardo de Oleo singled to score Trevor Mitsui. Josh Anderson bounced a high infield single, bringing in Joe Munoz and evening the score, 2-2.

Cedar Rapids reclaimed the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the sixth on its way to a victory and a doubleheader split. Luis Arraez delivered an RBI double that would drive in Olson. Later in the inning, Murray struck out with the bases loaded to end his quest for the cycle. He went 3-of-4 with a single, a double and a triple in game two.

Michael Theofanopoulos (1-0) was credited with his first win this season after striking out the side in the top of the sixth. Gabe Speier (1-1) yielded the go-ahead run and suffered the loss. Nick Anderson tossed a scoreless seventh inning and secured his third save. Kernels starter Miles Nordgren posted a career-high and team-season-high nine strikeouts in a no-decision.

Cougars catcher Jose Queliz led the offense in Kane County's 2-0 shutout during game one. His bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the second inning scored Munoz for an early lead. In the top of the fifth, Queliz crushed his first home run of the season out of the ballpark to left field and gave the Cougars their winning margin of 2-0.

Bo Takahashi (1-0) tied a career high with eight strikeouts in six shutout innings to record his first win this year. Despite a quality start, Cody Stashak (2-2) took the loss after allowing two runs over six frames. Cameron Gann tallied his team-high fifth save with a scoreless seventh inning of work.
