Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio - Ed Charlton blasted a tie-breaking two-run home run and the Dayton Dragons held on to defeat the South Bend Cubs 5-4 to earn a doubleheader split on Tuesday night. The Cubs won the first game 2-0.

The Dragons fell behind 2-0 in game two after South Bend's Donnie Dewees hit a two-run home run in the top of the third inning. But Dayton started back in the bottom of the third when Charlton doubled to left, went to third on Jose Siri's sacrifice, and scored on Zack Shields' double to make it 2-1.

The Dragons took the lead in the fourth. The inning began with back-to-back walks to Tyler Stephenson and James Vasquez. Brantley Bell advanced the runners with a sacrifice, and Shane Mardirosian's fly out to left brought in Stephenson to tie the game. Charlton followed with a two-run home run to left, his second of the year, to give the Dragons a 4-2 lead. The Dragons added another run in the fifth when Shields reached on an infield single, stole second, went to third on a ground out, and scored on Shed Long's single to make it 5-2.

South Bend scored two runs in the seventh of a scheduled seven-inning game, but Dragons closer Jeremy Kivel got a big double play ball with the bases loaded and no one out, then got the next hitter to ground out to end the game.

Second game Dragons starter Jacob Constante (1-3) earned his first Midwest League win. Constante worked five innings, allowing two runs on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Kivel recorded his fourth save.

Charlton and Shields each had two hits for the Dragons in the second game.

In the first game, South Bend's Eddy Julio Martinez belted a two-run home run in the second inning to account for the game's only scoring. South Bend pitchers Carson Sands and Casey Bloomquist shutout the Dragons on five hits.

Dragons starting pitcher Austin Orewiler (0-2) pitched well but suffered the loss. He worked five and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on five hits with no walks or strikeouts.

The Dragons (7-25) host the Cubs (18-12) again on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Jose Lopez (3-3, 4.11) will start for the Dragons against South Bend's Justin Steele (1-4, 9.39).
