Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Bowling Green, KY - In the opener of a three-game series and a seven-game homestand at Bowling Green Ballpark, the Bowling Green Hot Rods tuned a seven-run seventh inning into a 7-2 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts on Monday night.

In their attempts to carry over their momentum from a roadtrip where they won four of six games, the Hot Rods were shutout through six innings only to be kept in the game by a strong start from pitcher Jose Mujica.

The 19-year-old righty, who only surrendered a pair of solo homers to outfielder Andrew Guillotte and designated hitter Ryan Hissey in the third inning, struck out a career-high eight batters while just giving up five hits through six innings.

To get Mujica off the hook for the loss, they completed a perfect seven, scoring seven runs on seven hits in the seventh inning to take a 7-2 lead.

As Lugnuts reliever Conor Fisk entered his fourth inning of work after starter Sean Reid-Foley threw three scoreless frames, the Hot Rods scored their first run on a throwing error by Fisk on a sacrifice bunt from Manny Sanchez that plated Michael Russell. One batter later, Brett Sullivan crushed a three-run homer off of Fisk into the right-field bullpen to give the Hot Rods the lead. The inning was capped off by a RBI double from Peter Maris and a two-run single from Russell.

Overall, the Hot Rods sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning. The seven runs scored ties the most in any inning this year for Bowling Green.

On the pitching side, Yoel Espinal earned the win in relief, improving to 1-0 on the year with a scoreless seventh inning. To finish off the game, Jose Alvarado tosses two shutout innings while striking out five batters in the process. In total, the Hot Rods pitchers struck out 14 Lugnuts hitters.

With the victory, the Hot Rods have won 11 of their last 16 games and are a season-high three games over .500.

The Hot Rods will return to action on Tuesday at Bowling Green Ballpark with the second game of a three-game series against the Lansing Lugnuts. The Hot Rods will send RHP Roel Ramirez to the mound while the Lugnuts will counter with RHP Ryan Cook.

First pitch is scheduled at 6:35 p.m.
