LumberKings Capitalize On Walks And Errors In Series Opening Win At Wisconsin

May 10, 2016 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release

Grand Chute, WI - Down 2-1 going to the top of the fifth, the LumberKings (19-11) took advantage of miscues by the Timber Rattlers (14-17), scoring four runs in the inning to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Clinton would add on another in the seventh, and beat Wisconsin by a 6-3 final on a cold Monday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

With starter Jake Drossner out of the game, it was tasked upon reliever David Lucroy (1-2) to hold the LumberKings at bay in the middle innings. Lucroy started the fifth by walking James Alfonso, and then surrendering a single to right field to Braden Bishop, moving Alfonso to third. That brought up Logan Taylor, and with a hit and run put on, he singled to left, bringing home Alfonso to tie the game at two. Austin Cousino then hit into a fielder choice, putting runners at the corners for Rafael Fernandez, who walked to load the bases. Lucroy's command then betrayed him against Ricky Eusebio, walking him to force in Bishop from third, giving the LumberKings a 3-2 lead. Next up was Luis Liberato, and he hit into a fielders choice that could've been a double play. However, Blake Allemand's relay to first was low and skipped away from first baseman Alan Sharkey, allowing both Cousino and Fernandez to score. Liberato got one RBI on the play, as Allemand's error was ruled to have brought the second run home. After the dust settled, the LumberKings had a 5-2 lead going to the bottom of the fifth.

LumberKings starter Lukas Schiraldi (3-2) was extremely effective, as he allow two runs (one earned) on just two hits in five innings of work in recording his third win.

In the first Trent Clark drew a leadoff walk from Lukas Schiraldi. With one out and Isan Diaz up, Schiraldi threw a wild pitch that advanced Clark to second. Mitch Ghelfi came up with two outs, and poked a single just past the outstretched glove of Rayder Ascanio, scoring Clark to make it 1-0 Wisconsin.

The LumberKings would square up the score at one in the third, as with the bases loaded and two outs, Logan Taylor hit a ball in the hole between second and first, but when first baseman Alan Sharkey flipped to Jake Drossner covering first base, Drossner's foot never touched the bag, allowing Taylor to reach and a run to score to make it 2-1. Wisconsin would get another run back in the third on a pair of throwing errors on the same play, but Schiraldi limited the damage to just that run, keeping it a one run ballgame until the fifth.

Darin Gillies relieved Schiraldi after five and pitched two scoreless innings. Nick Kiel came in after and gave up just one run in the ninth, sealing the deal for the LumberKings.

Clinton and Wisconsin resume their series tomorrow at 6:35, with Art Warren (3-0, 1.65) going against Marcos Diplan (3-1, 2.35). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM, with Greg Mroz on the call beginning at 6:20 with the Iowa Pork Producers Pregame Show.
