Tri-City Triumphs over Brooklyn, 11-4

BROOKLYN,NY - June 23, 2015 - On Monday night the Cyclones were the recipients of a lop-sided victory -- on Tuesday night, the Tri-City ValleyCats returned the favor as they defeated Brooklyn by the score of 11-4. The ValleyCats pounded out 16 hits, as Brooklyn fell to 3-2 on the early season. Michael Bernal's second home run in as many nights, was the lone bright spot for the Cyclones.

After being shutout for 22.0 consecutive innings, coming into tonight the Tri-City ValleyCats wasted little time putting that streak to an end on Tuesday night. Kevin Canelon made the start for the Cyclones, and after walking one batter during the entire 2014 season, he walked Tri-City leadoff hitter Johnny Sewald to kick off the game. Drew Ferguson was next up and he reached first on a throwing error by the Cyclones hurler before Anthony Hermelyn singled to load the bases with nobody out. Trent Woodward grounded out for the first out of the inning, pushing home the game's first run and moving everyone else up a base. Bryan Muniz was next up and took advantage of the scoring chance with a booming double to right field that gave Tri-City the early 3-0 advantage.

But Brooklyn responded quickly, as Michael Bernal continued his hot start with a two-run home run through the rain drops that invaded MCU Park early in the game, as the 'Clones trimmed the defecit to 3-2.

After trading zeroes in the second, the Valley Cats took control of the game in the top of the third. Canelon again walked the leadoff batter before surrendering four consecutive singles, which led to two more runs, forcing the lefthander from the game. Gaither Bumgardner was the first arm out of the bullpen, and he allowed an RBI single to Alexander Melendez, the first batter he faced, to make it five straight hits, before working out of the inning. But the damage was done as Tri-City led 6-2 after three.

The 'Cats added to their lead in the top of the fourth when Woodward sent the first pitch he saw over the left field wall, a solo blast, to pump the Tri-City lead to 7-2. Brooklyn tried to claw back into it, scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth, courtesy of a Pedro Perez RBI single and Michael Katz sacrifice fly respectively, to slice the Tri-City lead to 7-4 after five.

But the ValleyCats power surge continued in the sixth when Cesar Carrasco connected on his first home run of the season, a solo shot, to expand the ValleyCats lead to 8-4 after six. After an uneventful seventh and eighth innings, the ValleyCats tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the ninth - all with two outs - to make the final score 11-4.

The Cyclones and ValleyCats will square off in the rubber game of the three-game series tomorrow evening at MCU Park with RHP Jose Celas making the start for Brooklyn. It will be "Saved by the Bell Night" at MCU Park with special on-field jerseys that pay homage to the early 90's television show. Dennis Haskins, who played the role of Mr. Belding, will be in attendance to mix and mingle with fans.
