Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- The Aberdeen Ironbirds snapped a 3-3 tie with eight runs in the top of the sixth inning and then held off a late Vermont rally for their first win of the season with a 12-10 New York-Penn League victory on Tuesday night at historic Centennial Field.

Aberdeen scored the eight runs in the sixth on six hits, including five run-scoring singles off Lake Monster relievers Tyler Willman and Jesus Rivas. Stuart Levy and Ricardo Andujar had back-to-back RBI singles to give Ironbirds a 5-3 lead before Cedric Mullins, Austin Pfeiffer and Randy Gassaway each had a two-run single to give Aberdeen a 11-3 advantage.

Vermont got a couple of runs back in the bottom of the sixth on a Lana Akau infield single and Chris Iriart sacrifice fly, but still trailed 12-5 before trying to rally in the eighth inning. Iriart got the inning started with an RBI single and Shawn Duinkerk followed with a single to load the bases. Seong-min Kim then smacked a 3-1 pitch over the leftfield fence for a grand slam homer to cut the deficit to 12-10. It was the Lake Monsters second grand slam in just five games this season and the 17th all-time in 22 years.

The 10 runs are the most scored by Vermont in a loss since losing 16-11 to Tri-City at Centennial Field on June 24, 2005. Lake Monster pitchers also allowed 17 hits to the Ironbirds, the most hits given up by Vermont hurlers at Centennial Field since Aberdeen had 16 hits in a 10-5 win on July 18, 2011 (last time Vermont gave up 17 hits at home was to Hudson Valley July 28, 2010).

Aberdeen scored three runs in the top of the first inning off Vermont starter Chris Kohler, making his first appearance in a game since August of 2013. After allowing three runs on four hits in the opening frame, Kohler gave up just two hits over the next four innings. Willman (0-1) was charged with six runs on four hits and two walks in just one-third of an inning to take the loss. Ironbird reliever Tanner Scott allowed two runs on two hits over 2 2/3 innings to earn the win, while Caleb Kellogg tossed a scoreless ninth for the save.

Gassaway went 4-for-5 with a double and three RBI for Aberdeen (1-4), while Mullins was 3-for-6 and Austin Pfeiffer 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBI. Kim had two hits to go along with the grand slam for Vermont (1-4), while Jesus Lopez was 2-for-5 with two runs and Lana Akau 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

The Lake Monsters will wrap up the six-game homestand to start the 2015 season on Wednesday night against Aberdeen beginning at 7:05 pm. It is First Responders Night at the ballpark sponsored by the Vermont State Police.
