Lowell Spinners News Release
FISHKILL, NY - A two-out first inning rally by the Hudson Valley Renegades dug the Lowell Spinners a hole too deep to emerge from as the Spinners dropped their first game of the season, 6-3, Tuesday night at Dutchess Stadium.
Hudson Valley (4-1) jumped out to an early lead with a two-out first inning rally. After back-to-back singles, Dioscar Romero walked the bases loaded. Jose Paez followed with a two run single and after Nic Wilson plated a third run, Joe Oliver went to the bullpen for Brandon Show who got out of the inning with the Spinners in a 3-0 hole.
Lowell (4-1) got a run back in the third inning on a one-out triple by Jordon Austin. A ground out by Jemile Weeks, making a rehab appearance with the Spinners, plated Austin to cut the Hudson Valley lead to one.
The Renegades answered promptly in the bottom half of the inning, once again scoring with two outs. Cade Gotta doubled and Paez followed with a run-scoring single to push the lead back to three at 4-1.
The Spinners pulled back within one in the fifth inning, taking advantage of back-to-back walks by Hector Lorenzana and Brandon Magee to lead off the inning. After Austin sacrificed them to scoring position, Weeks followed with a two-run single to bring the score to 4-3.
Lowell would pull no closer however as the Renegades added a pair of single runs in the sixth and seventh innings and Lowell left two men in scoring position in the ninth for a 6-3 final and their first loss of the season.
Romero (0-1, 40.50) struggled in his first start since missing the remainder of the season following his first start of the 2014 season with the Spinners. The Renegades got to him for three runs on four hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning. Brandon Show kept the Spinners in it with 3.1 innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits and a walk, striking out one. Taylor Nunez got tagged with an unearned run in two innings of relief while Enfember Martinez pitched in-and-out of trouble, allowing one run on four hits, a walk and a hit batter, striking out three over two innings.
Mitch Gunsolus led the offense with two hits, while Austin, Josh Ockimey and Alex McKeon all added extra base hits. Weeks, rehabbing from Pawtucket, drove in all three Spinners runs while finishing the night 1-for-4.
Lowell looks to end the season-opening road trip on a winning note when Luis Ramos (0-0, 20.25) gets the ball for a 6:30 first pitch.
