Staten Island Yankees News Release

After crashing the Brooklyn Cyclones (2-1) Opening Day with an 8-3 win, the Cyclones take a second game at Richmond County Bank Ballpark from the Staten Island Yankees (1-2), 6-4.

Staten Island's Will Carter (0-1) made his professional debut, but ran into trouble in the first inning, only recording two outs before giving up two runs to the Cyclones. Brooklyn's Vincent Siena drew a walk, followed by a Michael Bernal double to right field to plate the first run of the ball game. Bernal then reached third on a Carter wild pitch that allowed the Bernal to come home on a Thairo Estrada fielding error, making the score 2-0 after one inning.

The Cyclones added to their lead in the third inning as Bernal nailed a triple to center field, then scored on a ground ball by Zach Mathieu, extending their advantage to 3-0.

Brooklyn's offense continued to put distance on Staten Island in the fifth inning. Alfredo Reyes reached on an error by Staten Island third baseman Drew Bridges, followed by a single by Siena. Mathieu and Jeff Diehl knocked back-to-back singles, bringing home both Reyes and Siena for a 5-0 lead.

The Staten Island bats finally made some noise in the sixth inning, responding with two runs of their own. Junior Valera drew a leadoff walk, then scored two batters later when Estrada hit a double to left field, giving the Baby Bombers their first run of the game. Catcher Eduardo de Oleo hit his second double of the season just a few batters later to send Estrada across the plate, cutting the lead to 5-2.

The Yankees continued the scoring in the next inning. Ryan Krill and Zack Zehner both drew walks, setting the table for RBI singles from both Griffin Gordon and Thairo Estrada, making it a one-run ball game.

The Cyclones answered right back in the top of the eighth inning as Diehl hit his first home run of the season, putting the game at its final score of 6-4.

Staten Island travels for a six-game road trip to Connecticut and Tri-City before returning home on Sunday, June 28 versus State College for Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame Night.
