
Scrappers Win Slugfest

Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers (2-2) brought out the bats in Game 1 of a three game series against the Batavia Muckdogs (0-4).
Batavia jumped out early on an RBI groundout for Giovanny Alfonzo. His groundout scored Anfernee Seymour, to give the Muckdogs a 1-0 lead. Stone Garrett then hit a solo home run to left to make it 2-0 Batavia.
Mahoning Valley scored in the top of the second on an RBI double for D'vone McClure. Batavia responded with four runs in the bottom of the second. Seymour had an RBI single, a Kieran Lovegrove wild pitch scored Travis Brewster, who had walked earlier in the inning. Seymour scored on a sacrifice ground out, and Alfonzo scored on an error by Emmanuel Tapia. The Muckdogs led 6-1 after the second inning.
Mahoning Valley inched back. In the top of the third, Anthony Santander hit a double. Li-Jen Chu hit a double to score Santander and Mark Mathias, who singled.
After three, it was 6-3 Muckdogs.
Mahoning Valley scored five runs in the top of the fifth. Santander hit a two-run home run to score Mathias. Sicnarf Loopstok and Nathan Lukes scored on an RBI single by McClure. Later in the inning, Ka'ai Tom hit a double to center to score McClure. At the end of the fifth inning, the Scrappers led 8-6.
Batavia took the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Alfonzo hit a ground ball to short that took a bad hop and scored Brewster and Seymour.
Mahoning Valley took the lead for good in the 7th inning. The Scrappers scored seven runs. Chu scored on an error by shortstop Seymour. Austin Fisher scored when Leurys De La Rosa walked him with the bases loaded. Lukes scored on a Willi Castro single to single back to the mound. With the bases still loaded, Mathias was hit by a pitch, and it allowed McClure to score. Loopstok then hit an RBI single to score Tom. Castro and Chu later scored in the inning on an error and sacrifice fly, respectively. Mahoning Valley batted around in the seventh inning.
Batavia tried to tighten the score late in the game. Stone Garrett hit his third home run of the season, a three-run shot. Mahoning Valley led 15-11, and that was the final.
Brock Hartson (1-0) got the win in his professional debut. He went an inning and a third giving up two runs on three hits while walking one. Ryan Perez threw left handed and gave up the three-run home run to Garrett in the inning and a third he pitched.
The loss went to Leurys De La Rosa (0-1), who allowed seven runs, four of them earned, in an inning.
