Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
BROOKLYN, NY - Five different Tri-City batters posted multi-hit games, while three drove in more than one run, as the ValleyCats topped the Brooklyn Cyclones 11-4 on Tuesday night at MCU Park in Brooklyn.
After failing to score during the past two games, the 'Cats quickly found their offensive rhythm in this contest, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning behind an two-run double by first baseman Bryan Muniz, and an RBI by Trent Woodward.
The Cyclones cut into the 'Cats lead with a two-run home run by Brooklyn right fielder Michael Bernal in the bottom of the first frame, but Tri-City scored three runs again in the top of the third, thanks to RBI singles by third baseman Cesar Carrasco, shortstop Kolbey Carpenter, and right fielder Alexander Melendez.
The scoring continued in the top of the fourth, when Woodward hit an opposite-way home run over the left field wall off of Brooklyn reliever Gaither Bumgardner for the 'Cats first long ball of the season. Two innings later, Carrasco hit a solo home run of his own, smashing a line drive past the scoreboard to extend the 'Cats lead to 8-4.
Three frames later, the ValleyCats scored three runs in an inning for the third time in the game, as Muniz drove in designated hitter Anthony Hermalyn with a single, Carrasco drove in Woodward with a double, then Muniz scored on a wild pitch to conclude the onslaught.
Five Tri-City hurlers combined to hold the Cyclones to four runs, only one night after Brooklyn scored fourteen times. Right-handers Scott Weathersby, Ralph Garza and Kevin McCanna combined to pitch six innings in their respective professional debuts, while Yeyfry Del Rosario earned the win, thanks to his three strikeouts in two spotless frames. 'Cats closer Adam Whitt then pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking out Cyclones outfielder Tucker Tharp to end the game.
Leading the way on the offensive side statistically for the 'Cats was Muniz, who went 5-6 with two doubles, setting career-highs in hits, while also tying a career-high with three runs batted in. Carrasco (3-6, 2B, HR, 3RBI) and Woodward (3-6, HR, 3R, 2RBI) also posted three-hit games, while Carpenter and Melendez each went 2-5 with an RBI.
The ValleyCats will look to carry their strong offensive performance into Wednesday night, when they conclude their three-game road series against the Cyclones at 7:00 p.m. The game will feature a pitching matchup between Tri-City RHP Rogelio Armenteros, and Brooklyn RHP Jose Celas. After the game, the 'Cats will head home to Joseph L. Bruno Stadium to begin a three-game set against the Staten Island Yankees, starting with the home opener at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
