
Trenton Walks-Off with Win

(Trenton, NJ)- Trenton Outfielder Edwar Gonalez connected on the game-winning RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning to send Trenton to a walk-off win over Portland on Sunday afternoon. With the win, Trenton took three out of four games in the series against Portland. Trenton is back over the .500 mark for the first time since June 29th (38-37).
With the game tied at 1-1 in the ninth inning, Second baseman Reegie Corona led off the frame with a walk against Portland Reliever Tommy Hottovy (0-1). Shortstop Eduardo Nunez followed by dropping a bunt in front of home plate. Hottovy picked up the bunt and made an errant throw to second base allowing Corona to make it second base on the error. Designated Hitter Noah Hall followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance Corona to third base and Nunez to second. After a pop-out by Catcher Jesus Montero, First baseman Chris Malec walked. That set the stage for Gonzalez's heroics. Gonzalez singled just in front of Portland Center fielder Josh Reddick to drive in Corona with the game-winning run. The walk-off win was Trenton's first since a 2-1 11-inning win against New Hampshire at Waterfront Park on July 8th.
Trenton (47-46) tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning. With runners at first and third base and one out, Malec lifted a sacrifice fly RBI to center field to plate Nunez and tie the game at 1-1. Nunez was the only player with two hits in the game for Trenton.
Portland (44-49) took the lead the in the top of the second inning. With one out, Left fielder Ryan Kalish walked against Trenton Starting Pitcher Wilkin De La Rosa. Right fielder Jason Place followed with a walk to put runners at first and second base. A wild pitch by De La Rosa advanced Kalish to third base and Place to second base. Kalish scored with two outs in the inning on a wild pitch.
Trenton Starting Pitcher Wilkin De La Rosa allowed three hits and one run in 4 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out two. Trenton Reliever Grant Duff (3-0) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to tally his his third win in five appearances for the Thunder. Trenton's bullpen did not allow an earned run in the series (20 2/3 innings). Hottovy allowed three hits and two unearned runs in 2 2/3 innings to take the loss. Portland Starting Pitcher Ryne Lawson yielded only one hit in six innings for a no-decision.
The Thunder starts a four-game series in New Hampshire on Monday night. RHP Paul Bush (0-0, 0.00) will make his Thunder debut against New Hampshire RHP Kenny Rodriguez (1-2, 8.16).
