Portland Drops 3 of 4 to the Thunder

(Trenton, NJ) - Trenton's RF Edwar Gonzalez delivered a bases-loaded single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Trenton Thunder (47-46) a 2-1, walk-off win against the Portland Sea Dogs (44-49) on Sunday afternoon at Waterfront Park. The Sea Dogs dropped 3 of 4 in the series and begin a 5-game series against the Rock Cats on Monday night.

2B Reegie Corona led off the ninth inning with a walk against losing pitcher LHP Tommy Hottovy (0-1). SS Eduardo Nunez reached base safely on a fielder's choice and a throwing error by Hottovy on the force out attempt at second base. DH Noah Hall delivered a sac-bunt but Hottovy fanned C Jesus Montero for the second out. 1B Chris Malec fell behind but worked a two out walk and Gonzalez delivered the heroics.

RHP Grant Duff (3-0) earned his second win in as many games by pitching a perfect ninth. Hottovy worked 2.2 innings on three hits, two runs (both unearned) on two walks and a strikeout.

Portland took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on the wildness from LHP Wilkin De La Rosa. With one out, LF Ryan Kalish and RF Jason Place each walked. With SS Iggy Suarez at the plate, the runners moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch and Kalish scored on a second wild pitch by De La Rosa. The lefty worked 4.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits, four walks and three strikeouts.

RHP Ryne Lawson worked around two walks in the first inning and finished the game with six scoreless frames on one hit (single by SS Eduardo Nunez), three walks and four strikeouts. Lawson issued a lead-off walk to 1B Chris Malec in the second inning and retired 13 of the next 14 batters faced.

Trenton tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning off Hottovy. Nunez led off the frame with a single and advanced to second base on a fielder's choice. On the play, Hottovy's throw to second base was dropped by the shortstop (Suarez). Nunez scored the tying run on a sac-fly by 1B Chris Malec.

The Sea Dogs continued their struggles against the Thunder bullpen. RHP Josh Schmidt relieved De La Rosa and yielded one walk and fanned three over 1.1 IP. RHP Kevin Whelan tossed two scoreless on two walks and four strikeouts. Trenton's bullpen worked 20.2 innings in the series, allowing one unearned run on 10 hits, 7 walks and 29 strikeouts.

Notes...Place has reached base safely in 5 of 6 starts since joining Portland from High-A Salem...Lawson notched his 4th quality start of the season and his first scoreless appearance...The Sea Dogs allowed five unearned runs in the final three games of the series, committing three errors in back-to-back games...The Sea Dogs finished the regular season 3-4 at Waterfront Park.
