CURVE/HARRISBURG SERIES: The Altoona Curve and the Harrisburg Senators (AA - Washington Nationals) conclude a four game series tonight at Blair County Ballpark. Currently the Curve are 4-2 against the Senators this season.
LAST TIME OUT: The Senators defeated the Curve for the second night in a row by a count of 7-2. Derek Hankins allowed six runs on six hits in his first start since 7/4. Jose Tabata extended his career high hitting streak to 12 games.
FOR ALTOONA: LHP Daniel Moskos will make his 17th start (18th appearance) for the Altoona Curve tonight. It will be his second start against Harrisburg. Moskos tossed 6.0 innings and allowed just two runs on six hits in a Curve win on 5/13. Moskos has tossed at least 5.0 innings in 17 consecutive starts. Moskos has won his last two starts tossing 10.0 innings allowing seven runs. Moskos was the Pirates' first round draft choice in June 2007 out of Clemson University.
FOR HARRISBURG: Southpaw Matt Chico gets the start for the Senators tonight. Chico is a seven year veteran who was selected in the third round of the 2003 draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Chico has seen major league action in each of the past two seasons accumulating a 7- 15 record with a 4.98 ERA in 42 major league outings. Chico began this season in Single-A Hagerstown where he started three contests and allowed just three runs in 11.0 innings of work for a 2.45 ERA. This will be his fifth Double-A start of 2009 and he is coming off of his longest start of the season after tossing 5.0 innings and allowing two runs on three hits in a win against Reading on 7/12.
HOME IS WHERE THE HITS ARE: Two of the Pirates top prospects are currently enjoying nine game hitting streaks at Blair County Ballpark. Highly touted Pirates prospect Gorkys Hernandez is hitting .400 (14x35) and has a 15 game on-base streak at BCB dating back to 6/21. Pirates No. 1 prospect Pedro Alvarez is hitting .389 (14x36) over the nine game stretch with two home runs and four RBIs.
JOSE TABULATES: Pirates No. 3 prospect Jose Tabata is having a fantastic July. Tabata is hitting .313 (20x64) this month and is in now on a career-high 12-game hitting streak. Tabata had two nine-game hitting streaks when with the Yankees organization. Tabata has now surpassed Steve Lerud for the longest hitting streak by a Curve player this season. Lerud enjoyed an 11-game streak from 4/25 through 5/15.
MARVELOUS MACHI: Curve reliever Jean Machi tossed another scoreless inning last night. Machi is now riding a 9.0 scoreless inning streak and has the lowest ERA of any Curve pitcher at 1.27.
