Connecticut Defenders News Release

MANCHESTER, NH- The series finale between Connecticut and New Hampshire was a combination of good pitching, timely hitting, great defensive plays, errors and runs. In the end the Fisher Cats rallied for a 4-2 over the Defenders to claim the series 3-1 at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium.

With the infield drawn in, 1B-David Cooper hit a pop up to shallow left that plated 3B-Scott Campbell for the game winner. RR-Nick Gorneault would add an insurance run with an RBI double to right centerfield to cap off a two run eighth inning for the Fisher Cats in the series clincher.

Scoreless through four, Connecticut found the scoreboard in the fifth inning after LF-Bobby Felmy drew a leadoff walk and scored on a CF-Mike Mooney RBI single.

Defenders' starter RHP-Daryl Maday was locked in, cruising through six innings working all sides of the plate. Maday's only mistake of the ballgame was a huge one, as the first pitch dealt to LF-Adam Calderone was sent over the right-field wall for a two run homer and gave New Hampshire their first lead of the game at 2-1. Maday left after 6.2 innings of work, scattered seven hits, allowing two earned runs, walked a pair and struck out three in the no decision.

Connecticut was able to get Maday off the hook in the eighth when they tied the game at two. 3B-Sharlon Schoop drew a leadoff walk against reliever RHP-Casey Janssen (1-0) who is recovering from a shoulder injury apart of a MLB rehab from Toronto. C-Jackson Williams then sac bunted Schoop over to second. After striking out 2B-Brock Bond, Janssen induced a slow chopper on the third base side off the bat of SS-Brandon Crawford but rush the throw to first sending it to right-field and allowing Schoop to score.

The Defenders would get a one out walk in the ninth by Felmy to bring the potential tying run to the plate but Fisher Cats closer RHP-Danny Farquhar struck out the next two batters earning his seventh save. This is Connecticut's first series loss since the first week of June against interstate rival New Britain (June1-4).

Joe Paterson (2-3) suffered the loss for Connecticut allowing two earned runs off of three hits and one walk in two innings of work. Janssen (1-0) picked up his first Double-A win of the '09 season allowing just the one unearned run and walking one in 1.1 innings of work.

Connecticut continues the eight day road-trip now in Binghamton as they take on the B-Mets for a four game series. Tomorrow's matchup had RHP-Jake Ruckle (0-1) tosses for Binghamton and the Defenders are still TBA. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm from NYSEG Stadium.
