Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ)- Altoona Third baseman Jason Bowers had a two-run home run and the Curve held off Trenton 3-1 on Monday night from Waterfront Park. Trenton has now dropped a season-high five games in a row.
Down 1-0 in the third inning, Altoona (50-59) scored two runs to take the lead. Shortstop Luis Cruz led off with a single against Thunder starting pitcher Michael Gardner (3-4). Bowers followed with a two-run home run to give the Curve a 2-1 lead. The Curve extended the lead to 3-1 on an RBI groundout by Center fielder James Boone in the fourth inning. Trenton's best opportunity to score came later in the game during the seventh inning. The Thunder had runners at the corners with two outs, but Altoona reliever Josh Shortslef (4-2) retired Trenton Second baseman Reegie Corona on a flyout to end the threat. Shortslef earned the win in relief going three shutout innings. He gave up only two hits and struck out two. Altoona reliever Jeff Sues pitched the final two innings for his first save.
Gardner allowed four hits and three earned runs in 3 1/3 innings to take the loss. He made the spot start in place of Thunder starting pitcher Chase Wright, who was a late scratch as tonight's starter. Trenton's bullpen combined to go 4 2/3 innings and gave up only one hit. Thunder reliever Phil Coke pitched two scoreless innings in only his second relief appearance of the season. Thunder first baseman Cody Ehlers and Designated hitter James Cooper each had two hits in the loss.
Trenton will look to end the losing streak on Tuesday night in the second game of the four-game series against Altoona. RHP Eric Hacker (5-2, 2.78) will start for Trenton against Altoona RHP Dan Reichert (1-1, 3.55). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
