Keep It Low...Aeros pitching dominated Binghamton in yesterday's 2-1 win at Canal Park. With the victory, the Aeros won their first series since taking three of four at Reading just before the All-Star break. RHP Steven Wright worked five solid innings, allowing only an RBI infield single in the fourth. He stranded a runner at third to open the game, and then avoided two-out trouble in the third when catcher Damaso Espino threw out Emmanuel Garcia trying to steal second to end the inning. A second-round pick in the 2006 June draft, Wright struck out five and allowed just four hits with one walk on the day. RHP J.D. Martin got his team-high tying eighth win with three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two hits while striking out two. Kenosha, WI native Scott Roehl worked a scoreless ninth for his fifth save in seven chances this season.
Digging In...The Aeros pitching staff held Binghamton to just four runs in the three-game series, starting Friday night when LHP Scott Lewis limited the Mets to just one run in seven innings of work and LHP Reid Santos and RHP Erik Stiller pitched a perfect inning apiece to polish off the victory. RHP Frank Herrmann was a tough-luck loser Saturday, allowing just one run in four innings in his start. LHP Tony Sipp worked a scoreless fifth inning in that game and LHP Chuck Lofgren went four innings and allowed just one hit, a solo home run to Salvador Paniagua in the ninth. Over the series Akron pitchers combined for a 1.33 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 27 innings. In the month of July, Aeros pitchers have posted a 3.14 ERA, the third lowest in the Eastern League behind Trenton and Connecticut (both have July ERAs of 3.13).
Make It Count...Aeros LF Matt LaPorta drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning yesterday, his final at-bat before joining his Olympic teammates in preparation for their trip to Beijing. C Damaso Espino started the winning rally with a walk, and after Mets reliever Edgar Alfonzo retired the next two hitters, pinch-runner Jose Constanza stole second base and RF Bronson Sardinha drew a walk. LaPorta then delivered the winner, a smash to right that plated Constanza from second. Akron's first run came in the third when CF Nathan Panther led off with a blast into the right-field bleachers to put the Aeros in front, 1-0. It was Panther's fourth home run of the season.
In the Organization...All the minor league teams in the Cleveland organization were victorious yesterday. Mahoning Valley beat Jamestown 9-4, with 2008 first-rounder Lonnie Chisenhall going 2-4 with a run and an RBI. Matthew Brown had a big day for Lake County, socking a grand slam and driving in six runs in a 7-3 win over West Virginia. Kinston topped Wilmington 4-3, using a two-run home run from 2007 1st-round pick Beau Mills and a solo homer from Ryan Goleski, and Buffalo completed its second straight shutout of Charlotte 5-0, highlighted by a grand slam from Morgan Ensberg.
