Altoona Curve News Release
TRENTON, NJ- Jason Bowers' third-inning, two-run homer and five scoreless innings of relief by Josh Shortslef and Jeff Sues were the difference in Altoona's series-opening, 3-1 victory over the Trenton Thunder Monday evening at Waterfront Park in Trenton, New Jersey.
Bowers two-run homer erased a 1-0 Trenton lead and the Curve (50-59) never trailed the rest of the game. James Boone picked up a fielder's choice RBI to finish the scoring in the fourth.
Altoona's pitching stole the show from that point on and carried the club to its third win in five games on the current road trip and its 11th victory in 16 games overall.
Starting pitcher Christian Castorri, who took the mound Monday in place of previously-scheduled starter Luis Munoz, allowed only one run in four innings before turning the game over to Shortslef in the fifth. The left-hander worked three scoreless frames, allowing only two hits, before giving way to Sues in the bottom of the eighth. Sues, pitching in his home state of New Jersey, tossed two scoreless innings to earn his first save at the Double-A level. Shortslef (4-2) was credited with the win.
Munoz did not start Monday's game after being designated for assignment by the Pirates on Sunday. He could rejoin the club later in the week if he clears Major League Baseball's waiver process.
Michael Gardner (3-4) took the loss for Trenton, allowing three runs in 3 1/3 innings. The right-hander was making an emergency start in place of Chase Wright, who was scratched from his appearance earlier in the day.
The Curve managed only five hits in the contest, including Bowers' longball. Luis Cruz singled ahead of Bowers in the third to extend his current team-high hitting streak to six games.
Trenton (64-43), the first-place club in the E.L. North, lost its fifth consecutive game.
Altoona will play the second game of its four-game series at Trenton Tuesday evening at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Dan Reichert (1-1, 3.55) will make his third start for the Curve against Thunder righty Eric Hacker (5-2, 2.78). Fans can hear all the action on Real Oldies 93.5 FM and the Curve Radio Network starting at 6:50 with the Curve Gameday Show presented by the Hotel Belmar and Budget Beverage.
