B-Mets End Evening With Split

July 28, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Salvador Paniagua homered twice, including a walk-off blast that helped the Binghamton Mets to a 4-1 win over the Connecticut Defenders in the resumption of a suspended game. Connecticut came from behind to win the regularly-scheduled game 5-3 at NYSEG Stadium Monday. The B-Mets have lost 16 of 25.

The B-Mets (57-52) began the day by resuming a suspended game from July 19th, in which Connecticut (54-52) led 1-0 after two innings. That was the score into the eighth, when Paniagua homered to left off Adam Cowart, knotting the game 1-1.

Josh Petersen began Binghamton's ninth-inning rally with a one-out single off Kelvin Pichardo. After Pichardo (1-4) hit pinch-hitter Salomon Manriquez, Paniagua smacked one well over the leftfield fence for the victory.

Jose Sanchez (10-5) provided seven innings of scoreless relief for the win. The righthander allowed four hits and struck out four.

In the regularly-scheduled contest, the B-Mets took a 1-0 lead in the first when Jonathan Malo singled off Joey Martinez, stole second, moved to third on an error and scored on Daniel Murphy's sacrifice fly.

After Eddy Martinez-Esteve hit a game-tying solo homer off Joe Hietpas in the second, the B-Mets responded in the bottom of the frame. Ambiorix Concepcion and Manriquez reached with back-to-back, one-out singles. Concepcion scored on a throwing error before Paniagua's single plated Manriquez for a 3-1 B-Mets lead.

Connecticut's Adam Witter got to Tim Lavigne (2-2) for a go-ahead, three-run homer in the sixth.

Martinez (7-8) allowed an earned run over six innings for the win. Justin Hedrick got the final three outs for his sixth save in as many chances.

Tuesday, the B-Mets play the second game of a four-game series against the Connecticut Defenders. Eric Brown (5-7, 5.40) will start for Binghamton against Garrett Broshuis (11-6, 3.53) of Connecticut. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at NYSEG Stadium with the radio broadcast beginning at 6:50 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

Notes: Paniagua is the sixth B-Mets player with a multi-homer game and the first since Ambiorix Concepcion (7/10 @ CON)...Hietpas was making the first start of his career...the B-Mets picked up their fourth win this season when trailing after seven innings...Binghamton has five walk-off wins this season, including two walk-off homers (also Daniel Murphy, 7/18 vs. CON).
