
Trenton tops New Britain, 5-3

(New Britain, CT)- Trenton Outfielder Marcos Vechionacci had three RBI, including the go-ahead two-run double in the seventh inning, to help the Thunder defeat New Britain 5-3 on Sunday afternoon at New Britain Stadium in New Britain, CT. Trenton snapped a four-game losing streak, and salvaged the final game of the three-game series against the Rock Cats.
Down 2-1 in the seventh inning, Trenton scored three runs to take the lead. With one out in the frame, Shortstop Eduardo Nunez reached on an error by New Britain shortstop Yancarlos Ortiz, and advanced to second base on a walk by Shortstop Reegie Corona. With two outs in the inning, Third Baseman Marcos Vechionacci connected a two-out two-run double off of New Britain Reliever Jose Lugo (1-2) to put the Thunder on top 4-2. Earlier, Vechionacci had a sacrifice fly RBI to plate Trenton's first run of the game in the fifth inning. It was his first three-RBI game of the season. Trenton (10-11) added another run on an RBI single by Catcher Kyle Anson. The Thunder tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning when Second baseman Justin Snyder scored on an error by New Britain Second baseman Brian Dinkelman.
Trenton Starting Pitcher Wilkins Arias, making his first start since the 2006 season with Charleston (Low-A), went four innings and yielded four hits and two runs. New Britain (10-12) scored two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Dinkleman scored on a passed ball, and Designated Hitter Danny Valencia drove in a run on a ground out. Arias was the spot starter when scheduled starting pitcher George Kontos was promoted to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Triple-A). Trenton Reliever Kankeoa Texeira (2-2) came on for Arias and tossed 3 2/3 effective innings to earn the win. He yielded five hits and one run. Texeira struck out three and walked two. Thunder Reliever Amaury Sanit pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to notch his second save for the Thunder. Lugo took the loss for the Rock Cats. He yielded three unearned runs in 1 2/3 innings.
Trenton continues its road trip on Monday night in Bowie, MD against the Bowie Baysox (Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Oiroles). RHP Zach McAllister (1-1, 2.53) will start for Trenton against Bowie LHP Troy Patton (2-0, 1.21). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
