
RHP George Kontos Promoted to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre

(New Britain, CT)- The Trenton Thunder, Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, have announced that RHP George Kontos has been promoted from Trenton to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Triple-A). C Jose Gil has been transferred back to Trenton from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Triple-A). Kontos was scheduled to pitch for Trenton on Sunday afternoon against New Britain (Double-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins). LHP Wilkins Arias will start in his place.
Kontos was 1-1 with a 2.66 ERA in four starts for the Thunder. He had tallied 24 strikeouts and nine walks in 20 1/3 innings. In his last start, he tossed six shutout innings vs. Connecticut on April 28th. During 2008, Kontos went 6-11 with a 3.68 ERA in 27 starts for Trenton. He led the team in strikeouts (152) and innings (151.2). He led all Yankee minor leaguers in strikeouts and finished third in the Eastern League in strikeouts. He entered 2009 as the 23rd best prospect in the Yankees Minor League System according to Baseball America. He was originally selected by the Yankees in the fifth round of the 2006 draft.
Gil has appeared in two games for the Thunder and is 2 x 2 at the plate. Gil did not appear in a game for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. During 2008, he hit .243 with a home run and 25 RBI in 73 games for Tampa (High-A). He matched his career-high with 17 doubles. He threw out 40 percent of potential base-stealers (25-of-63). In 2007, he combined to hit .234 with 40 runs, 12 home runs, and 50 RBI in 100 games with Charleston (Low-A) and Staten Island (New York-Penn). He was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Yankees 7/2/03.
Trenton plays the final game of a three-game series against New Britain this afternoon. Game time is set for 1:35 p.m. LHP Wilkins Arias (0-1, 1.74) will start for Trenton against RHP Jay Rainville (1-1, 3.00). Trenton's road trip will continue in Bowie, MD on Monday night. Trenton returns to Waterfront Park to host the Binghamton Mets (Double-A affiliate of the New York Mets) on Friday night at Waterfront Park.
