(Norwich, CT) - RHP Adam Mills (1-1) pitched a team-high 7 IP and DH Jon Still blasted a 2-run homer, leading the Portland Sea Dogs (11-11) to a 3-1 victory over the Connecticut Defenders (11-12) on Sunday afternoon at Dodd Stadium in front of 2,777 fans. The âDogs take 2 of 3 from the Defenders and continue their roadtrip on Monday night in Binghamton.
Mills earned his first Double-A after win after going 0-6, 4.91 ERA in his first 15 starts with Portland. The righty scattered six hits on one run, no walks and fanned five. RF Eddy Martinez-Esteve gave Connecticut a 1-0 lead with a 2-out, run-scoring single in the third inning but that was all the offense for the Defenders.
RHP T.J. Large faced one batter, striking out 2B Brock Bond on three pitches with the tying run on second base to earn his first save of the year. RHP Richie Lentz earned his first hold of the year with 1.2 IP of relief.
RHP Jesse Foppert (0-2) suffered the loss for the Defenders, allowing three hits and two runs over 5 IP. Still's homer was a 2-run shot with 2-outs in the top of the fourth inning, giving the Sea Dogs the lead for good. Portland added a run in the eighth inning on a run-scoring single from 2B Ryan Khoury.
The Defenders stranded two runners in the eighth inning when CF Mike Mooney grounded out to third base. In the ninth, 1B Andy D'Alessio reached on an error to start the inning and 3B Sharlon Schoop walked. SS Brian Bocock advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt but PH Brad Boyer struck out. Large entered the game after the strikeout and earned his 2nd Double-A save.
The Sea Dogs resume their 7-game roadtrip on Monday night against the Binghamton Mets at NYSEG Stadium; game time is 6:35 PM.
