Portland takes game and series from Connecticut

NORWICH, CT- The Defenders (11-12) drop the game and the series to the Sea Dogs (11-11) after a 3-1 loss Sunday afternoon at Dodd Stadium.

Jesse Foppert retired 9 of the first 10 hitters he faced, before DH-Jon Still's two run homerun over the left field wall put the Sea Dogs out in front for good.

The Defenders struck first in the third inning, after a Brock Bond stolen base (3) to get in scoring position. RF-Eddy Martinez-Esteve singled to left field to score the 2B-Bond for a Defenders 1-0 lead.

The Sea Dogs would respond right away in the fourth. 2B-Ryan Khoury would single off of Foppert. Then Jon Still took Foppet's 1-2 pitch over the wall in leftfield to give Portland the 2-1 edge on Connecticut. The Sea Dogs added a run in the seventh when Khoury drove in RF-Bubba Bell on a base hit to increase the lead to 3-1.

The Defenders tried to rally in ninth, with two runners aboard. Tyler Graham, pinch running for 1B-Andy D'Alessio on third base, and Sharlon Schoop at second base and just one out. RHP-Richard Lentz struck out pinch hitter Brad Boyer for out number two. Portland brought in RHP-TJ Large to face Brock Bond, and Large struck out Bond on 3 straight pitches to seal the win for Portland.

Portland's starter Adam Mills (1-1) was the winning pitcher, and TJ Large (1) earned the save. Suffering the loss for the Defenders was RHP-Jesse Foppert (0-2).
