Trenton Titans Week in Review

Trenton Titans News Release

While the final month of 2012 was good for the Trenton Titans, the start to the 2013 calendar hasn't been as kind to start with. Though they were able to salvage a point out of the three-game weekend, two heartbreakers eventually bookended a convincing defeat, all at the hands of Atlantic Division rivals.

Friday January 4: Trenton - 2, WHEELING - 3 (OT)

Trenton found itself down 2-0 after the first period, but clawed its way back in the second thanks to Jacob Cepis (9) Shane Harper, who's first career goal as a Titan was a PPG that tied the game, 2-2, at 17:08.

Peter Delmas (W, 25 saves) was solid for the Nailers, but Niko Hovinen (OTL, 29 saves) was outstanding, especially late in the third, when he and the defense had to kill off a 5-on-3 Wheeling power play just to force OT.

Wheeling ended the game quickly in the extra session, using a 2-on-1 break to score the game-winner just 1:01 into OT.

Saturday January 5: Trenton - 0, WHEELING - 5

Trenton never got on track in this one, finding itself down 2-0 before two minutes elapsed. After a third goal at 6:38 by Paul Crowder (his 2nd of the game and 3rd of the series), Scott Wedgewood (L, 4 saves) was pulled for the first time in his professional career, in favor of Hovinen.

Hovinen was quickly greeted by Crowder 15 seconds after entering the game, to record a hat trick. Hovinen did settle things down, eventually making 16 saves. But after a fifth goal in the period, the damage was done as the Nailers fended off a couple good Titans opportunities to secure the win.

Sunday January 6: Trenton - 3, ELMIRA - 4

It was another classic, one-goal game between the Titans and Jackals, as they always seem to be. This time the Titans jumped out to the early 2-0 lead on the strength of back-to-back power play goals by Jacob Cepis (10) and Andy Bohmbach (15, 6th PPG). Eventually the Jackals would counter late in the period to end the first 20 down 2-1.

It wouldn't stay that way for long in the second as Elmira scored 28 seconds in on a carry-over power play to tie things at 2-2. Trenton would grab the lead back when Harper banged home a rebound for his second goal of the season (and third point of the night) and a 3-2 Titans advantage at 14:32.

Elmira tied the game four minutes later, then took the lead for good when Artem Demkov scored his second of the night just 38 seconds into the third, making it 4-3 Jackals.

Trenton looked like they tied things back up when Justin Taylor finished two nice passes by Connor Goggin and Marcel Alvarez with just 2:41 left in regulation to beat Marc Cheverie (W, 34 saves). However just as the goal was being scored the Titans were whistled for an interference penalty, which nullified the goal.

Trenton did have another chance to tie with the goalie pulled in the final 40 seconds. After a wild flurry in the slot, a Titans stick managed to rip a shot on goal through a heavy crowd. The goal would have counted, however the shot hit the outside of the left post and bounced away just before time expired.
