Trenton holds on for victory

(Manchester, NH)- Trenton Designated Hitter James Cooper had the go-ahead two-run single in the fifth inning to lift the Thunder over New Hampshire 9-8 on Monday night from Manchester, NH. Trenton has now won six games in a row. The game was Trenton's longest nine-inning game of the season.

With the game tied at 5-5 in the fifth inning, Trenton (63-37) loaded the bases up with one out against New Hampshire reliever Julio Pinto (4-3). Pinto was taken out in favor of RHP Jared Gothreaux. He struck out Trenton Right fielder Edwar Gonzalez for the second out. But, Cooper followed with a two-run single to give Trenton a 7-5 lead. Pinto took the loss giving up two runs and three hits in 3 2/3 innings. The Thunder tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning on a two-out two-run single by Shortstop Ramiro Pena. Trenton scored eight of its nine runs with two outs. Trenton Second baseman Reegie Corona, Third baseman Chris Malec, Catcher P.J. Pilittere, and First baseman Cody Ehlers each had two hits in the win for the Thudner. The Thunder bullpen combined to go six innings to preserve the win. A combination of four relievers allowed only six hits and three runs. Thunder RHP Anthony Claggett (2-0) picked up the win by going 2+ innings.

Trenton scored five runs in the first inning to take a 5-0 lead. The big hits in the frame were two-run double by Catcher P.J. Pilittere and a two-run double by Gonzalez. New Hampshire (40-61) scored two runs in the first, a run in the second, two runs in third inning to tie the game. New Hampshire second baseman Scott Campbell went 3 x 5 with two doubles and two runs in the loss. New Hampshire cut the deficit to 9-8 in the ninth inning, on a two-run home run by Right fielder Travis Snider. But, Thunder reliever Jose Valdez struck out Catcher J.P. Arencibia and induced a fly out from Designated hitter Brian Jerolomon for the final outs in the game. Valdez earned his first Double-A save. Despite scoring eight runs, New Hampshire left 15 men on base. The Trenton pitching staff tied a season-high with 12 walks.

Trenton and New Hampshire will play the second game of the four-game series from Manchester, NH on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Jason Jones (10-3, 2.28) will start for Trenton against New Hampshire LHP Brett Cecil (4-2, 2.86).
