Defenders Fall, 8-2

Connecticut Defenders News Release

PORTLAND, ME- The Sea Dogs came out swinging as the Defenders came out booting in an ugly 8-2 loss to Portland on Monday night.

The Defs touched the scoreboard first in the contest as Olmo Rosario reached on an error, went to second on a sac bunt, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a groundout by Ben Copeland to make it 1-0.

The Sea Dogs responded; they responded loudly. Four runs crossed the dish in the home half of the first on just two hits and an error by Dave Maroul at short. All four runs came in to score when two outs were recorded as Joey Martinez couldn't find the strike zone against big league re-habber David Ortiz. He then walked the next two batters and the inning spiraled out of control to the tune of a 4-1 lead for Portland.

The Dogs continued to pour it on in the last of the second as they plated two more runs on two hits and another error by Maroul as the advantage grew to 6-1.

Connecticut got on back in the third when Rosario ripped a solo shot off the scoreboard in left-center to shrink the lead to 6-2.

Martinez would settle down through the middle innings until the bottom of the sixth. Martinez would issue a leadoff walk, a single and another walk before being lifted for Nate Bump. Bump allowed two of Martinez' runs to score on a sac fly and a RBI single off the bat of Ortiz to make it 8-2, Portland.

Maroul's three errors were the most by any single Defender in the 2008 season as he struggled at shortstop. Martinez suffered his eighth loss as he walked a season-high six as Dave Gassner earned just his second win.

The Defs and Dogs will do battle on Tuesday evening at Hadlock Field at 7:00pm. Tune into all the action at ctdefenders.com or on the Defenders' Radio Network starting at 6:45pm with the AT&T Real Yellow Pages Pre-Game Show.
