McNiven Headed to Beijing Olympics

July 21, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- The Connecticut Defenders have been informed that pitcher Brooks McNiven will get the chance to represent his country and the San Francisco Giants in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Team Canada announced late last week.

"It's an experience of a life time and I'm never going to have a chance to do this again so I'm very excited," said McNiven.

McNiven has been solid for Connecticut all season long, posting an impressive 2-2 record with a 1.69 ERA in 15 appearances that includes 7 starts. McNiven has held his opponents to an exciting .194 batting average. Brooks received the call to Triple-A Fresno early in the season to help out with a fatigued pitching staff. Since rejoining the Defenders in mid June, McNiven has been stellar, allowing just 5 earned runs in 31.2 innings of work.

"We are happy for him. It's an honor to represent your country in the Olympics and secondly the San Francisco Giants organization," said Defenders Pitching Coach Bob Stanley.
