Connecticut Defenders News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY- The Defs dug an early hole, but they resurfaced to the tune of an 8-3 win over the Binghamton Mets.
The B-Mets jumped ahead in the second when Jonathan Malo turned on a 2-2 fastball and ripped it over the left field wall to give the home Mets a 1-0 advantage.
Binghamton would add two more in the third as Salomon Manriquez roped a two-out bases loaded single into the outfield to plate Jose Coronado and Dan Murphy as the lead extended to 3-0.
The Defs would nibble at their deficit in the top half of the fourth as Ben Copeland led off with a single. Copeland proceeded to swipe second, advanced to third on a groundout to the right side by Pablo Sandoval, and was singled home by Adam Witter to make it 3-1, Mets.
Connecticut would blow up at the dish in the sixth frame. Sandoval started things off with a one-out solo bomb to trim the lead to one run. Witter walked, Carlos Sosa struck out and the Defenders had their work cut out for them with two outs already recorded. Olmo Rosario singled to put runners on first and second and Dave Maroul smoked a single of his own to score Witter. Kyle Haines grabbed a bat in a pinch-hit situation and did not disappoint. With two on in front of him, Haines launched a double to the wall to score Rosario and Maroul as the Defenders took their first lead of the game, 5-3.
Maroul provided an insurance run with one crack of the bat in the eighth as he homered to dead-center. The Defs continued their two-out rally after the solo bomb when Eddy Martinez-Esteve drew a walk and Antoan Richardson slapped a base hit to left. Ryan Rohlinger, who was previously having a rough game offensively, cleaned off the bases with a two-run double down the left field line. At the middle of the eighth, it was Connecticut, 8, Binghamton, 3.
The score would hold as Josh Sharpless, Paul Oseguera, Ronnie Ray, Jason Waddell and Kelvin Pichardo worked to keep the Mets at bay. Sharpless earned his first win as starting hurler Ben Snyder went just four innings.
The Defenders will travel to Portland for a four-game series against the Sea Dogs. David Ortiz is scheduled to play in the series and you can catch all the action at ctdefenders.com or on the Defenders Radio Network.
