(Reading, PA)- Reading hit two home runs and nudged past Trenton 5-3 on Tuesday night from First Energy Stadium in Reading, PA. With the loss, Trenton dropped its third straight game. The Thunder stranded 11 runners on base in the loss.
Reading (33-23) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Trenton Starting Pitcher Wilkin De La Rosa (3-3). With two outs in the inning, Designated Hitter Michael Taylor walked. He advanced to second base on a single by First Baseman Kevin Mahar. Third baseman Neil Sellers followed with a three-run home run to give the Phillies a 3-0 lead.
Trenton (30-26) sliced the Reading lead to 3-2 with two runs in the top of the fourth inning against Reading Starting Pitcher Kyle Drabek. The Thunder had five consecutive hits in the inning. With one out, Catcher Kyle Anson doubled. Second baseman Justin Snyder followed with an RBI single to plate Anson. Left fielder James Cooper then singled to move Snyder to second base. After a single by Shortstop Reegie Corona loaded the bases, Center fielder Colin Curtis delivered an RBI single to make it 3-2. But, Drabek was able to strand the bases loaded by retiring Third baseman Chris Malec on a strikeout, and Designated Hitter Jesus Montero on a groundout for the final out of the inning. Anson had two doubles in the loss for Trenton.
Reading added a run in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Mahar. Trenton cut the lead to 4-3 in the eighth inning on a solo home run by Corona off of Reading Reliever Mike Zagurski. The home run was Corona's second of the season. Corona went 3 x 5 in the loss. Reading extended the lead back to two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI single by Left fielder Michael Spidale. Spidale had three hits in the win for Reading. De La Rosa went six innings and scattered six hits and four runs to take the loss. He struck out three and walked two. De La Rosa allowed two home runs, and has now allowed a team-high eight home runs on the season. Drabek (2-0) yielded seven hits and two runs over five innings. He earned the win despite walking five and striking out only three. Reading Reliever Jason Anderson pitched a 1-2-3 innings for his third save of the season.
Trenton and Reading continue their three-game series on Wednesday night at First Energy Stadium in Reading, PA. RHP Christian Garcia (2-0, 0.41) will start for Trenton against Reading LHP Joe Savery (6-1, 4.05). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
