New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Akron, OH- Luis Perez worked out of a one-out, bases loaded situation in the fourth inning and a no-out bases loaded jam in the fifth inning unscathed, but John Drennen's two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning broke up a 2-2 tie, lifting the Akron Aeros to a 4-2 triumph over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at Canal Park on Tuesday night.
David Cooper (1-for-3, HR, BB, RBI, 2 R) launched a two-out solo home run, his third, off Akron starter Josh Tomlin in the top of the first inning, staking New Hampshire (27-32) to a 1-0 lead.
The Aeros (37-20) went ahead by scoring two unearned runs off Perez in the bottom of the second. Carlos Santana (2-for-3, 3B, R, IW) singled and later scored on a two-base throwing error charged to third baseman Chris Gutierrez. Jared Goedert (1-for-3, BB, 2 R), who reached on the error, came home with the go-ahead run when Drennen (3-for-3, HR, 2B, HBP, 3 RBI) ripped a double into the right field corner, giving Akron a 2-1 lead.
That's all the Aeros would score against Perez, who scattered six hits over five innings without allowing an earned run. The southpaw fanned one, hit two batters and issued an intentional walk.
The Fisher Cats tied the game, 2-2, in the eighth inning when Cooper walked and Brian Dopirak (2-for-4) singled off reliever Neil Wagner. Left-hander Matt Meyer walked Adam Calderone (0-for-3, BB) to load the bases. Winning pitcher Steven Wright induced a double-play grounder from Nick Gorneault (1-for-3), allowing Cooper to score the tying run.
Rommie Lewis pitched two strong innings of middle relief, but faltered in the seventh when he walked Goedert and served up Drennan's third homer of the year, a two-run liner into the right field bleachers on a payoff pitch.
Lewis (1-3) allowed two runs on four hits in 2.1 innings. The lefty fanned one and walked two.
Wright (5-0) worked one shutout inning of relief, striking out one to earn the victory.
Vinnie Pestano recorded his Eastern League-leading 15th save with a scoreless ninth.
The Fisher Cats send right-hander Randy Boone (4-3, 3.72) to the Canal Park mound at 7:05pm on Wednesday night against Aeros righty Hector Rondon (6-4, 3.31) in the second game of the three-game series. Radio coverage begins with the BayRing Pre-Game Show on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy.
The Fisher Cats return to Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Tuesday, June 16, to open a three-game series against the Akron Aeros, Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, at 7:05pm. There will be a pre-game parade to honor students who participated in the CCSNH Fisher Cats Reading Challenge, and it's Fungo's Birthday.
