Akron RubberDucks News Release
Sunday Showdown...Akron won game #36 Sunday evening, taking down the host Altoona Curve by the final score of 7-4. The Curve dropped to 19-38 on the season, as a six-run eighth inning propelled the Aeros to the win and the 3-1 edge in the four-game weekend series. DH Beau Mills and 1B Jerad Head smacked home runs en route to two-hit performances each, RF John Drennen picked up three RBI with the go-ahead, bases-clearing triple in the eighth, and CF Jose Constanza swiped his league-leading 21st base of the season. RHP Carlton Smith (3-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief of starter Ryan Edell, and closer Vinnie Pestano picked up his EL-leading 14th save in preserving by retiring all three batters he faced in the final inning. With the victory, the Aeros now lead the Reading Phillies by 3.5-games in the Southern Division.
Mind Games...
Along with his solid performance Sunday, Head is now hitting .413 (19-46) in 14 games against Altoona this season. Two of his four home runs this year have come against the Curve, and his 12 RBI off Altoona pitching are tied for the team lead. The native of Topeka, KS also showcased his versatility over the weekend, getting three starts at three different positions (left field, second base, and first base). The Aeros have won five straight series against the Curve dating back to last season, and improved to 10-4 against Altoona in 2009.
Where Amazing Happens...
2B Cristo Arnal has been on fire offensively all season long, especially since joining Akron May 21st. Arnal is batting .346 with a fantastic .433 on-base percentage in 16 games with the Aeros this season, and in his last eight games is hitting .387 (12-31), including his five-hit performance June 1st at Reading which tied a franchise record. In 16 games played earlier this season between Kinston and Columbus, the 23-year-old native of Caracas, VZ hit .333 (15-45) with his only home run on the year and eight RBI.
A Northern Style...
The Aeros welcome the New Hampshire Fisher Cats tonight for the start of a three-game set. New Hampshire stands at 27-31 on the season, and are only the second opponent from the Northern Division that Akron has faced all season. Tonight's game also kicks off the start of a six-day home stand, concluded by a three-game series against the Portland Sea Dogs from Friday through Sunday afternoon. In fact, the Aeros will play their next twelve games all against these two teams from the Northern Division, and it will be the only time all year Akron will play either team.
Go Figure...
Akron currently ranks 11th in the 12-team Eastern League with a .244 batting average on the season yet places fourth with a total of 262 runs scored in 56 games (4.68 runs per game). A big reason why this is true is the fact that the Aeros offense is second with 226 walks, while first with only 316 strikeouts incurred on the year....The Aeros starting pitchers are 22-15 on the season, but are only 1-9 in the last 18 team games overall, and have not earned a win since Hector Rondon did so May 25th.
