Trenton Comes up Short to Akron

(Akron, OH)- Akron Right fielder Matt McBride coaxed a game-winning bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Akron a 4-3 win over Trenton on Thursday afternoon from Canal Park. Akron won the season-series over Trenton with four wins in six games.

In the ninth inning with the game tied at 3-3, Designated Hitter Asdrubal Cabrera singled with one out. He stole second base and moved to third base on an error with two outs. Thunder Reliever J.B. Cox intentionally walked Left fielder Nick Weglarz and First baseman Beau Mills to loaded the bases. Cox then walked Right fielder Matt McBride on five pitches to bring home Cabrera with the game-winning run. Akron Reliever Josh Judy (3-2) earned the win in relief with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Cox (0-2) took the loss for his second loss of the series.

Trenton (37-34) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With Shortstop Eduardo Nunez at second base and Designated Hitter Jorge Vazquez at first base and two outs, Left fielder Noah Hall singled to plate Nunez for the game's first run. In the second inning, The Thunder added a run on a solo home run by Outfielder Edwar Gonzalez off of Akron Starting Pitcher Ryan Edell. Gonzalez made it 3-0 in the fourth inning with his second solo home run of the game. The two-home run game for Gonzalez was his first since August 17, 2008 at Reading. Thunder Third baseman Marcos Vechionacci had a two-home run game in the first game of this road trip at Binghamton on June 19th.

But, Akron (48-23) got a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo home run by Weglarz to cut the lead to 3-1. Weglarz hit three home runs and had eight RBI in the series. In the fifth inning, Akron sliced the lead to 3-2 on a bases-loaded walk to Mills from Thunder Reliever Jason Stephens. The Aeros tied the game at 3-3 in the eighth inning on an RBI ground out by Mills. Cabrera scored all the way from second base on the RBI ground out.

Trenton Starting Pitcher Kanekoa Texeira received a no-decision. He allowed four hits and one run over 3 1/3 innings. Edell also received a no-decision. He yielded seven hits and three runs over six innings.

Trenton returns to Waterfront Park on Friday night to start a four-game series against the Reading Phillies (Double-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies). RHP Zach McAllister (5-3, 1.81) will start for Trenton against Reading LHP Joe Savery (9-1, 3.24). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
