Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- After a lengthy dramatic walk-off win last night the Connecticut Defenders (41-31) rode the young arm of Madison Bumgarner to a 7-2 victory over Portland claiming the series 2-1.
Sea Dogs' starter, LHP-Kason Gabbard (0-2) made just his second start of the season and the Defenders could tell, jumping on him for four first inning runs. After delivering a pair of walks, RF-Eddy Martinez-Esteve delivered the biggest blow of the frame, a two RBI double giving the Defenders lead. 3B-Sharlon Schoop singled and CF-Mike Mooney drove in Martinez-Esteve with a slow chopper to short. SS-Brandon Crawford topped the inning off with an RBI single, plating Schoop as Connecticut led 4-1.
The Defenders used a pair of doubles by LF-Bobby Felmy and 1B-Brett Pill in the second to add another run and kept the same mentality in the third with doubles by newly acquired DH-Ramon Castro and Crawford who later scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Felmy, Connecticut led 7-1.
With the offense scoring runs, Defender's starter, LHP-Madison Bumgarner (5-1) showed the Sea Dogs why he was undefeated in two starts against them. Bumgarner made one mistake in his first inning of work allowing a run to score off a 3B-Jorge Jimenez single to plate 2B-Ryan Khoury who doubled but that was it. Bumgarner settled in, holding Portland to just four hits, walked two and struck out five in eight innings of work which tied his career high set back on August 9, 2008 against Greensboro.
Connecticut travels to New Britain for a showed of the Nutmeg State but more importantly #1 vs. #2 in the northern division. The Rock Cats will toss, RHP-Cole DeVries (5-5) in game one as the Defenders have yet to announce their starter. First pitch is slated for 6:35pm from New Britain Stadium.
