June 25, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- The New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, are proud to announce that starting pitcher Luiz Perez has been selected to participate in the 11th Annual XM Satellite Radio All-Star Futures Game as part of the Major League All-Star Game Festivities at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on Sunday, July 12.
Perez, a Dominican Republic native, will represent the Blue Jays on the World Team. The left-hander, who is the only current Fisher Cat on the Blue Jays' 40-man roster, is 4-6 with a 3.46 ERA this season. Perez shares the Eastern League lead in innings pitched (83.1), is tied for the team lead in starts (14) and has held opposing batters to a .226 batting average.
The Futures Game pits a United States team against a World squad, with both teams consisting of 25 of baseball's top prospects. Major League Baseball, in conjunction with the Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau, MLB.com, Baseball America, USA Baseball and all 30 clubs, determines the players. The rosters for the United States and World Teams were announced earlier today, and the game will be broadcast live at 2:00pm on ESPN2 and MLB.TV.
The Blue Jays originally signed Perez as a non-drafted free agent in July 2003. He began his pro career with the Dominican Summer League Blue Jays in 2005 and 2006, advanced to Auburn (Short-season A) in 2007 and Lansing (Class-A) in 2008 before skipping Dunedin (Advanced-A) and debuting with the Double-A Fisher Cats this season.
Perez is the sixth Fisher Cat in six years to be selected to play in the Futures Game. Aaron Hill won the game's MVP award in 2004. The other Fisher Cats to play in the showcase are Zach Jackson (2005), Davis Romero (2006), Robinzon Diaz (2007) and Scott Campbell (2008).
Perez is scheduled to take the mound when the Fisher Cats return to Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Friday, June 26, to open a four-game series against the Portland Sea Dogs, Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, at 7:05pm. The game features a Merchantsauto.com Stadium Replica Giveaway to the first 1,500 fans, courtesy of Merchants Automotive Group. For tickets, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
