Campbell Hits Two-Run Triple in 9-3 Loss to Reading

June 25, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

Reading, PA- Scott Campbell laced a two-run triple in the top of the sixth inning, driving in his first two runs of the season and highlighting a three-run frame for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, but the Reading Phillies responded with five unanswered runs to salvage the finale of the three-game series, 9-3, on Thursday night at FirstEnergy Stadium.

For the third time in the series, Reading (40-31) took the early lead. Facing Brandon Magee in the bottom of the first, Quintin Berry (1-for-3, 2B, 2 BB, SB, 2 R) drew a leadoff walk, stole second base, was sacrificed to third and came home on a sac fly by Michael Taylor (0-for-2, 2 BB, SF, RBI) for a 1-0 lead.

The Phillies increased their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning when Tuffy Gosewisch (1-for-4, 2 R) hit an infield single and scored on Berry's double into the left field corner. Berry would score on the play when second baseman Brad Emaus' throw to the plate skipped into the stands for a two-base error.

Reading tacked on an additional run in the home half of the fourth on a sac fly by Brad Harman (0-for-1, SF, BB, HBP, R, RBI), making it 4-0.

The Fisher Cats (32-41) started their comeback bad against Kyle Drabek in the top of the sixth inning. Luis Sanchez (1-for-3, 2B, R) started the stanza with a double to right, Todd Donovan (1-for-3, BB, R) beat out an infield single, and both runners scored when Campbell (2-for-4, 3B, 2 RBI, R) ripped a two-run triple to center. Campbell came around to score when Adam Calderone (1-for-4, RBI) lined a single up the middle, trimming the Phillies' lead to 4-3.

That was as close as New Hampshire would get, however, as Reading built the lead to 5-3 in the sixth when Brian Stavisky doubled off Magee and scored on Jeremy Slayden's single.

Magee (4-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits in six innings. The right-hander struck out three and walked two.

Drabek (4-0) won for the fourth time in five Eastern League starts. The right-hander fanned a season-high nine batters in 7.1 innings, yielding three runs on six hits, walking one.

Mike Zagurski went the final 1.2 innings to notch his fourth save.

The R-Phils added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning against Leon Boyd (0.1 IP). Carlos Leon (1-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI, R, SAC) hit a two-run double inside the left field line and Stavisky (0-for-2, 2B, 2 BB, 2 R, RBI) drew a bases-loaded walk from Edgar Estanga., and Neil Sellers (0-for-3, BB, SF, RBI) capped the scoring with Reading's third sac fly of the night.

The lone bright spot of the ninth inning came on Brian Dopirak's single to right, extending his hitting streak to a season-high 10 games.

After taking two out of three from the Phillies, the Fisher Cats open a four-game weekend series against the Portland Sea Dogs Friday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. Left-hander Luis Perez (4-6, 3.46), who was named to the World Team roster for the XM All-Star Futures Game on Thursday, will get the start for New Hampshire against Portland right-hander Ryne Lawson (1-6, 6.65) in the 7:05pm game.
