Altoona Curve News Release
ERIE, PA - Pedro Alvarez connected for his second home run of the season and the Curve put together a five run eighth inning rally to defeat Erie 8-6 Thursday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park.
After hitting his first home run Wednesday Alvarez wasted little time Thursday crushing a Pat Stanley pitch to deep center field for a two run homer in the top of the first.
Erie would answer with two runs in the second inning and then Deik Scram hit a solo home run in the third to give the SeaWolves their first lead of the day 3-2.
Andy Dirks singled home Cale Iorg to put Erie up 4-2, but Altoona closed the gap an inning later in the sixth when Alvarez was awarded home plate on a balk by Brett Jensen of Erie.
The SeaWolves opened the lead again in the seventh on a two run blast by Brennan Boesch, his 14th of the year, to give Erie a 6-3 lead.
A wild eighth inning then ensued with Gorkys Hernandez and Jose Tabata singling to start the inning. Hernandez then scored on a sacrifice fly by Alvarez. Jason Delaney then doubled to put runners on second and third, both runners advanced on a groundout by Jim Negrych scoring Tabata and putting Delaney on third who would then score on a wild pitch. Two batters later it was outfielder Jeff Corsaletti hitting a 2-2 pitch from Cody Satterwhite over the right field fence for a two run homer to give the Curve an 8-6 advantage.
Alvarez finished the day 2-for-4 a home run, a double, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Hernandez went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Randy Newsom (4-1) picked up his second win in as many days in relief of starter Mike Crotta.
Altoona (26-46) returns home Friday to begin four day, five game, series with the Bowie Baysox (Double-A Baltimore Orioles). Friday's game will put Curve lefty Daniel Moskos (4-6, 4.01) up against right hander John Mariotti (2-5, 2.87) for Bowie. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Friday with radio coverage beginning at 6:35 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network.
