Trans-Canada Clash Heats up for Snowbirds Night

March 19, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

It is set to be a special night on Saturday at Mosaic Place.

The Moose Jaw Warriors will host the Regina Pats for the 10th annual Snowbirds Night as the team honours the Canadian Forces Snowbirds for the night.

"I'm extremely excited, we haven't been able to do that for about two years now because of COVID, it's a really big night for the city, it's going to be a great night," Warriors captain Daemon Hunt said.

The Warriors will be sporting special-edition jerseys for the game and members of the Snowbirds flight team and ground crew will be in attendance.

The two organizations have partnered for ten years now, sharing best practices on teamwork.

"There's going to be a real buzz in the building, that's for sure," Warriors head coach Mark O'Leary said. "We're welcoming some of them in our dressing room before the game and that's always fun.

"There's big correlations between the two organizations and we're really looking forward to a little bit more normalcy of what we usually see year-to-year."

The rival Pats being in town for this year's edition of the game adds another element to the game.

The Warriors are also looking to clinch a playoff spot, which they can do with a win and a regulation loss by Prince Albert on Saturday.

"It's going to be like a playoff game, I'm really looking forward to it, I'm sure we'll have some fire in our eyes and we'll be ready to go," Hunt said.

The Warriors are coming off a split of their two-game Manitoba road trip to open the week, which included a 7-1 win in Brandon on Tuesday and a 4-0 loss in Winnipeg on Wednesday.

Warriors forward Eric Alarie said turnovers were the biggest difference between the two games.

"In the first game, we managed pucks pretty well, either using the boards or indirect plays to get the puck out of our zone and in the Winnipeg game, we couldn't quite do that, we were turning over pucks at both blue lines and that killed us," he said.

Going into Saturday's matchup against the Pats, the Warriors know they will need to be a bit sharper on that front.

"Regina's forecheck, they're on you in a hurry, we need to be able to get back to pucks quick and get the puck moving north in a hurry," O'Leary said. "When we're holding onto pucks a little bit too long, that's when we get in trouble.

"Winnipeg was a winnable game, it was 4-0, but it certainly didn't feel that way, a couple of bad bounces in terms of how the goals went in, but we were close and it's just the small details."

The Warriors and Pats face-off for Snowbirds Night at 7 p.m.

Tune into Saturday's game on Country 100, starting with the Pre-Game Show at 6:40 p.m.

The IKS Media Warriors Live pre-game show kicks off at 6:50 p.m. on watch.chl.ca.

The Warriors have partnered with Conexus Credit Union to offer 1,000 free tickets to the game, which are available at the Mosaic Place Box Office starting at noon on Saturday.

Conexus members just have to show their member card and can receive up to four free tickets.
