Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (45-12-2-1) got right back in the win column with a commanding 4-1 win over the Calgary Hitmen (21-30-6-2) on Friday night at Rogers Place.

The Oil Kings and Hitmen skated to a fairly even first period with both teams generating 11 shots on goal, but a Jalen Luypen goal 7:29 into the game would give Edmonton a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

Dylan Guenther knocked down a clearing attempt by the Hitmen at their blueline, left the puck for Carter Souch to send him in on a two-on-one rush with Luypen where he would make a perfect pass on to the tape of Luypen in the left-circle where the Chicago Blackhawks prospect would rip home his 28th goal of the season past the blocker of Brayden Peters.

In the second period, the Oil Kings were able to briefly build a 2-0 lead after Luke Prokop pounded a one-timer from the blueline past Peters at 11:53 of the middle stanza for his 11th goal of the season.

The Hitmen answered back shorthanded as Cael Zimmerman pounced on a loose puck below the Edmonton goal line and found a wide-open David Adaszynski in front of the Oil Kings net where he would slip a puck under the pad of Kolby Hay to keep the Hitmen deficit at one through 40 minutes of play.

In the third period, the Hitmen would keep it close until the final two minutes when Guenther would erupt for a pair of goals to put the game out of reach.

Guenther's first goal came on a penalty shot after he was awarded the chance after being slashed on breakaway. On the penalty shot, he wound his way into the right circle, made a step to the middle and lasered the puck five-hole on Peters.

With just 32 seconds left, and the Hitmen goalie pulled, Guenther took a pass from Jaxsen Wiebe and feathered a backhand into the yawning cage from just inside the Hitmen blue line to become just the third Oil King skater in franchise history to score 40 goals in a season.

Hay finished the night with 21 saves for his eighth straight win, while Peters turned aside 35 shots in the losing effort. The Oil Kings went zero-for-four on the power play, the Hitmen were zero-for-five.

Next up, the Oil Kings head to Lethbridge next Friday to open a home-and-home series with the Hurricanes.
