Asheville Tourists News Release
Hagerstown, MD-- For the second time in three days, the Hagerstown Suns walked off against the Asheville Tourists but Sunday evening was truly shocking to witness. Asheville took a 5-3 lead to the bottom of the ninth inning but after the Suns put the first two runners aboard, the Tourists lead was in serious jeopardy.
Trent Daniel was on to try and close out the game and the Tourists lefty was able to retire Isaac Ballou for the first out of the ninth. With both runners on the move, Wilmer Difo split the gap in left-centerfield for extra-bases and a tie game was eminent.
When the relay throw came back to the cutoff man, shortstop Emerson Jimenez inexplicably fired the baseball through the infield and straight into Hagerstown's dugout. Both runners had already scored before the ball reached Jimenez and Difo was just standing on second base. Difo was awarded two bases on the error and jogged uncontested around third and crossed home plate to win the game while Jimenez's teammates watched completely dumbfounded.
The Tourists scored first with a run in the second inning. Jose Briceno hit an RBI groundout to score Correlle Prime from third. The Suns tied up the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second on Brennen Middleton's RBI single to center.
Asheville scored three in the top of the sixth led by Prime's RBI triple to take a 4-1 lead.
Hagerstown chipped away with one in the bottom of the sixth and one in the seventh. The Tourists plated a key insurance run in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Patterson, but it was not enough.
Johendi Jiminian went six for Asheville and did not factor in the decision. Prime finished 3-for-4 and Patterson was 2-for-3 in the loss. For the first time all season Asheville has lost three consecutive road games but they return home on Monday night to face the Lexington Legends.
